Today in the United States it’s Thanksgiving Day. Between the turkey carving, football games and slices of pumpkin pie, I like to take a step back to look at all I have to be thankful for. The list is long and truly overwhelming when I think of all that I have and how blessed I truly am to be living the life I am. In the spirit of the holiday, I wanted to point out a couple of the things I am truly grateful for this year. I wrote a similar post last year and find it fun to see what has changed and what remains the same.
Family – My computer background right now is of my entire family at my brother’s graduation from Marine bootcamp. Every time I see the picture, I smile and realize how truly amazing it is to have eight siblings who are turning into amazing people. Add into that mix one brother-in-law, one nephew and one niece; and I am truly blessed with the blood relatives in my life.
Friends – When I moved back to the Midwest this summer, I had the opportunity to reconnect with friends I hadn’t seen in years. Those coffee dates, park outings and impromptu lunches have made me value true friendship all the more. Friendship isn’t a matter of proximity. It’s a matter of shared experiences and life-long love.
Job – Most people wouldn’t rank their job among the top things they are thankful for, but after doing the whole unemployed thing for two months and then landing an amazing job I am even more grateful for the ability to work. Even more, I am thankful for having a job that I love, one that feels less like work and more like play; one that lets me use my creative side and that rewards me for work well-done.
Writing Skill – I am far from the best writer out there, but I feel privileged to be able to form coherent sentences and, more importantly, love doing it. I continue to blog for Mercatornet and my style blog. This past year I also wrote and published my second young adult novel and began working on a third one.
Passion for Fashion – Also, another one that might seem odd, but I’m grateful that this is something that I have grown to love – a lot! There aren’t many fashion lovers out there who have a true understanding of the dignity and true beauty of the woman. So many of my readers, and the women I help wardrobe, seem impressed with my positive outlook and upbeat attitude about the world of fashion.
And in brief, I’m grateful for….
Words of praise and encouragement issued after a job well done.
Emails that arrive out of the blue and brighten the whole day with their inbox arrival.
The old beat-up car I drive that manages to successfully get me from point A to point B without trouble.
A good cold beer direct from the tap.
Music that can move the heart and soul.
Magical sunrises that start the day off right.
The crunch of fall leaves beneath my feet.
Free swag that comes as a perk of being a fashion blogger.
Cinnamon gingerbread latte’s from Pete’s – my new favorite coffee drink.
The Princess Bride, Beauty and the Beast, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers – three of my favorite movies of all time.
Sleeping under a quilt made with love by my mother.
Free Wi-Fi and coffee shops that let me stay for hours.
Good gym shoes and scenic running paths.
The roadtrip I made this summer with a friend to Niagara Falls.
Text messages and the ability to let a friend know I am thinking of her in just a few words.
Facebook, so I can stay connected to friends spread out across the country and around the world.
Flowers that grow out of cracks in the sidewalk.
The simple beauty of a newborn and the laughter of a toddler.
The architecture of Chicago.
My iPhone and the apps that make my life easier.
